Having been an early adopter of the computer as art tool, Rob Magiera made the switch from traditional media to electronic back in 1986, and has gone on to become recognized as one of the foremost computer artists in the world today.

While most of his colleagues rely solely on software programs like Photoshop® and Illustrator® as their primary tools, Rob has spent more than a decade exploring the unique capabilities that 3D modeling software can bring to the illustrator’s craft. “Although illustrators commonly use Photoshop to manipulate existing photographs to create entirely new images, synthetic photography is different,” says Magiera, “because there’s no need to start with an original photo.” Instead, the image is created entirely out of thin air. “The advantage,” he adds, “is that it’s possible to create “photographs” that would be impossible or impractical to create using traditional photography.”
